Turns out beer isn’t the only popular beverage on tap these days! We’ve recently been installing our custom draft systems to dispense cold brew coffee. Cold brew is no longer just a summer time refresher – it’s officially available year round.
According to Statista, cold brew coffee sales jumped from $8.1 million in 2015 to $38.1 million in 2017 – that’s a 370% increase! Cold brew coffee is different than iced coffee. It’s coffee that is brewed over a time frame of 12 to 24 hours from cold water. The end product is smoother than regular iced coffee with a fuller body and less acidic taste, and often has more caffeine.
In 2012, someone had the ingenious idea to give cold brew coffee a makeover by infusing it with the gas, nitrogen. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless gas that, when added to cold brew, creates a “creamy” effect. If you’ve never had a nitrogenated coffee, you’ve probably tried a nitrogenated beer. Nitrogenated beers have been around for years, with one of the most well-known ones being Guinness. Like beer, nitrogen cold brew is only available on tap. When the coffee is dispensed from a tap, it creates a cascading effect as the glass is filled, with a smooth layer of foam on top.
